Slovakia’s PM Says Ukraine War Has No Military Solution

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said the Ukraine crisis has no military solution and that his country will not agree to any plan that leads to the continuation of the war.

After meeting his Bulgarian counterpart in Sofia, he told reporters that Slovakia would not support proposals that would prolong the war in Ukraine. Fico also stressed that Bratislava insists on negotiations as the way to end the crisis.

Referring to the background of the war, the Slovak prime minister said his country knows what happened in 2014 and what took place in Odesa. He added that Slovakia is aware of the reasons for the war.

Although Slovakia is a member of the European Union and NATO, the country has in some cases distanced itself from the policies of both bodies since the war began in February 2022. Fico, who returned to power in 2023, has been a critic of military aid to Ukraine and anti-Russian sanctions.

In May 2025, he also attended Victory Day ceremonies in Moscow as the only leader of an EU member state and again called for dialogue with Russia. Sofia, where he made his latest remarks, is the capital of Bulgaria.
