CENTCOM Says Hormuz Strait Operation Aimed to Counter ‘Imminent Threat’
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that its recent military operation in the Strait of Hormuz was carried out to address what it called an “imminent threat.”
CENTCOM claimed the “limited and precise” action targeted forces affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to the command, those forces were in the process of “laying mines,” a situation it said posed a direct threat to regional security.
U.S. officials further blamed Iran as the main source of the alleged threat, saying the U.S. military took the operation to “protect civilian mariners and ensure the continued movement of commercial ships.”
CENTCOM also rejected the Revolutionary Guard’s position on what it called U.S. “aggression and hostile actions” during the anti-mining operation, claiming those remarks were “completely baseless” and false.
In the end of its statement, U.S. Central Command once again said the purpose of the strikes was to protect navigation and global trade in the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, and a significant share of energy and goods is transported through it.
