Symbolic Protest Performance Highlights Women’s Plight Under Taliban Restrictions

As the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power approaches, a group of protesting women staged a symbolic performance to highlight the consequences of the restrictions imposed on women. This demonstration comes amid ongoing bans and strict controls on women’s dress and movement without a male guardian.

In a video released of the performance, a woman dressed in typical attire with a face mask steps outside her home, only to be blocked by a figure dressed as a Taliban official holding a mock weapon. He questions her reason for leaving without a male guardian. Then, two other women portraying Taliban forces enter the scene, symbolically beating her and forcibly taking her away.

The protesting women, increasing their activism as Kabul’s fall anniversary nears, aim to depict what they call “five years of repression and exclusion of women from society.” Beyond disseminating messages and holding rallies, they employ artistic and theatrical tools to reflect the impact of Taliban restrictions on women’s daily lives.
