Xi urges Trump to avoid conflict as China and US seek common ground
Chinese President Xi Jinping, in a meeting with US President Donald Trump, stressed the need for Beijing and Washington to stay away from conflict, saying the two countries suffer from confrontation and benefit from cooperation.
In the meeting, he said China and the United States should choose competition rather than move toward confrontation, and avoid falling into a “conflict trap.” According to him, despite differences, ties between the two countries should be strengthened on the basis of finding common ground.
The Chinese president also said Beijing is working to expand the scope of cooperation with the United States. He added that the interests of the two countries are linked, and that China welcomes the presence of American companies in the country and expects Washington to show fair treatment as well.
In another part of his remarks, Xi described the development of artificial intelligence as requiring human control and said China is ready to expand cooperation with the United States in the fight against drugs.
He also invited 100,000 young Americans to go to China over the next five years for study. The meeting took place during the Chinese president’s trip to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
