At Least 141 Migrants Die Trying to Reach Spanish Territory of Ceuta

The human rights NGO Caminando Fronteras has reported that at least 141 migrants have died while attempting to reach the Spanish territory of Ceuta.

According to the organization, the deaths occurred between July 30 and August 4, with victims’ bodies found in both Ceuta and Moroccan territory. These migrants attempted to reach this Spanish autonomous city through mass crossings.

In contrast, the Spanish government has reported a lower death toll of at least 75, while Moroccan authorities have registered 11 deaths.

Spanish officials also stated that by the end of July, about 72,000 migrants had entered the area by swimming or walking around the breakwater separating Ceuta from Morocco. In response to the rise in migrant entries, military forces have been dispatched to help secure the region.

Estimates suggest that nearly 70,000 migrants have been returned to Morocco following these events. Ceuta is one of two Spanish autonomous regions in North Africa and has long been a major route for migrants attempting to enter Europe.
