Pakistan Claims Afghan National Carried Out Suicide Attack in Swat
Pakistani media, citing officials, report that preliminary investigations indicate the attacker in the suicide bombing at a police center in Swat was an Afghan citizen. The attack left at least 14 dead and 18 injured.
The incident occurred on Sunday, July 31, near the gate of the Kabal police station in Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The explosion happened as local residents were protesting against the rising insecurity in Swat.
Fida Hussain, a senior regional police official, told Reuters that among the dead were five police officers and eight civilians. He added that the fourteenth fatality was likely the suicide bomber.
Pakistani authorities stated that the head of the attacker was recovered from the blast site, and initial assessments suggest he was an Afghan national. However, no documents or further details have been released to confirm this claim so far.
The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has witnessed an upsurge in armed attacks and bombings in recent years.
