UN Security Council Updates Sanctions List with Identities of Five Senior Taliban Officials

The United Nations Security Council Sanctions Committee has announced an update to the identification details of five senior Taliban officials on its sanctions list. However, this update does not change the sanctions or restrictions imposed on them in any way.

The newly published list includes the names of the acting Minister of Interior, acting Minister of Hajj and Religious Affairs, acting Minister of Mines and Petroleum, the General Director of Intelligence, and the Taliban-appointed mayor of Herat. According to the committee, the changes are purely administrative and technical.

In response to this action, Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban administration, described it as a “continuation of failed past policies.” In an interview with the national television controlled by the Taliban, he claimed that such sanctions have been “ineffective” in the past and will yield no results now.

Mujahid also urged the Security Council to abandon what he called “wartime policies” and instead pursue a path of cooperation and engagement. Since the Taliban’s return to power, the UN Security Council has maintained sanctions against a number of officials from the Taliban administration.
