Women’s Organization Calls for Inclusive Political Process in Afghanistan

The organization “Women for Afghanistan” has issued an open letter to the United Nations Secretary-General and members of the Security Council, calling for the establishment of a credible, inclusive political process based on the will of all Afghan citizens.

The organization announced on Saturday, 24 July, that the letter was prepared in consultation with 30 organizations and 450 women from inside Afghanistan and reflects the collective views of a group of female activists and advocates.

The letter urges the United Nations to ensure that its assistance mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) creates a systematic and purposeful mechanism for ongoing engagement with diverse women’s groups, democratic forces, civil society representatives, and other political stakeholders both inside and outside the country.

The authors emphasize that this engagement should not be limited to symbolic consultations but must guarantee genuine and meaningful participation of women and other political and social currents in shaping Afghanistan’s political future.

Additionally, the letter stresses the implementation of recommendations from an independent assessment on Afghanistan, the appointment of a Special Representative by the United Nations, the establishment of clear criteria to measure progress in the political process, increased transparency and accountability of UNAMA, and ensuring full and equal participation of women at all stages of the political process.
