Telegraph Reports Increased Risk of Yemeni Closure of Bab el-Mandeb Strait

The British newspaper The Telegraph has reported that the Yemeni forces are apparently considering the option of closing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a strategic passage that is one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes. According to the media outlet, no concrete action has been taken in this regard so far.
The Telegraph stated that this issue arises within the context of regional pressures related to Iran, and Yemen is waiting for what it deems an appropriate time to potentially act. Should the strait be blocked, commercial ships would be forced to take a much longer route around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa; a path that could significantly increase the time and cost of shipping goods.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea and is one of the main arteries for transporting goods and energy between Europe and Asia via the Suez Canal. Any disruption in this passage could impact global supply chains and international markets.
The report continues that concerns about Bab el-Mandeb evoke similar sensitivities to those surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, another critical route for global energy transport, which has been the subject of extensive security debates in recent years. According to The Telegraph, Yemen is currently monitoring regional developments and has not yet made a final decision on this matter.
