Over One Billion Afghani in Worn Banknotes Destroyed in Balkh

Da Afghanistan Bank announced that 1,141,660,000 Afghanis in worn banknotes collected from the northern and northeastern zones of the country have been counted, thoroughly inspected, and destroyed in Balkh district, Balkh province.

According to the bank’s statement, the process was carried out in a special furnace under the supervision of a delegation led by Mullah Mohammad Akhund, the Second Deputy of Da Afghanistan Bank. The destroyed banknotes included denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 Afghanis which had been withdrawn from circulation.

Mullah Mohammad Akhund stated that this action was taken to prevent problems in financial transactions and to facilitate convenience for citizens. He emphasized that Da Afghanistan Bank is committed to strengthening the banking system and providing high-quality, transparent services.

He also urged citizens to take serious care in handling Afghan currency to avoid premature wear and tear and to reduce the costs of reprinting money.

According to provided information, the banknotes were loaded in the presence of representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Finance, and security agencies, and then transported to special furnaces for destruction. However, the Taliban administration has not yet disclosed details about the costs of reprinting this money or its impact on the liquidity situation in the market—a matter of considerable importance to citizens amid the country’s fragile economic conditions.
