Calls for Specialized Universities in Science and Artificial Intelligence in Afghanistan

A senior official at the Institute for Islamic Studies has emphasized the need for establishing specialized universities in science, technology, and artificial intelligence in Afghanistan. He stated that the Ministry of Higher Education should prioritize improving the quality of education rather than expanding the number of universities. The official underlined that without targeted investment in these fields, the country’s scientific development will not be possible.
Mufti Saifullah Moatasem, an official at the institute, conveyed in a congratulatory message to the top candidates of the Kankor exam that the Ministry of Higher Education must focus on raising educational standards. According to him, creating specialized academic institutions can foster scientific growth and regional competitiveness.
He further remarked that “every revolutionary system must make revolutionary decisions” and should not be afraid of reactions from some countries or what he called “ignorant individuals.” These comments come amid serious challenges faced by Afghanistan’s higher education system in recent years, including extensive restrictions on the education of girls.
Educational experts have repeatedly stressed that genuine development in science and technology requires equal access to quality education for all citizens. However, the Taliban administration has yet to lift the imposed restrictions on girls’ education in universities, which continues to cast uncertainty over the normalization and progress of higher education in the country.
