Israel Establishes 23 New Military Bases in Southern Lebanon, Raising Tensions

A Lebanese security source has revealed that the Israeli army has established 23 new military positions and bases across various areas in southern Lebanon. According to the source, this move contradicts commitments related to the framework agreement for withdrawal from these regions.
Reported by Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper quoting the source, most of these bases are equipped with advanced military facilities and equipment. However, the exact nature of the equipment does not allow for a conclusive judgment on Israel’s ultimate objective in establishing them, including whether the intention is long-term occupation or future repurposing.
According to the report, these bases are spread across a wide geographic belt in southern Lebanon, starting from the coasts of Naqoura and Al-Bi’ayzah, extending to western and central areas including Wadi al-Shalqou, Wadi al-Hujair, and parts along the border with the occupied territories.
One of these bases has been constructed in the town of Marun al-Ras. Local residents have posted images of these facilities on social media, showing new fortifications and the presence of military equipment in the area.
Lebanese sources further stated that these bases primarily include artillery, shelters for storing military equipment, and electronic systems, including air defense systems that the Israeli army has deployed within Lebanese territory.
It is noteworthy that prior to the ceasefire agreement, Lebanon’s Hezbollah repeatedly targeted Israeli positions and bases in these areas with missile attacks, making southern Lebanon a persistent flashpoint along the borders of the two sides.
