UN Secretary-General Guterres Welcomes New Financial Reforms to Strengthen UN Stability

Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has welcomed the approval of new reforms to the organization’s financial regulations by the General Assembly, stating that these changes will help enhance the financial stability of the UN.

On Tuesday evening, June 30, Guterres wrote on his social media page on X that some previous regulations had, at times, put the financial stability of the international body at risk. According to him, these challenges negatively affected the process of recording and managing financial resources.

He explained that under the new reforms, the next UN Secretary-General will no longer be required to return or account for funds that were administratively recorded but in practice were never received by the organization.

The UN Secretary-General added that these changes make financial resource management more predictable and responsible, paving the way for better implementation of the missions entrusted to the UN by its member countries. The United Nations primarily funds its budget through contributions from member states, and financial transparency is considered a key aspect of its operations.
