Trump Warns of Dire Consequences if Bagram Air Base Is Not Returned to the U.S.

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned of severe consequences if the Taliban administration refuses to hand over Bagram Air Base to the United States. The warning was issued on Sunday night (September 20) in a statement posted on Truth Social.

In his message, Trump wrote: “If Afghanistan does not hand over Bagram to those who built it — the United States of America — bad things will happen.” His remarks come amid ongoing U.S. efforts to negotiate with the Taliban for the return of this key military facility.

On Friday, Trump had also stated that discussions were underway with Taliban representatives regarding the future management of Bagram. He stressed the base’s strategic importance and said Washington intends to regain control of it.

During his official trip to London, Trump appeared at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, where he reiterated that the U.S. is determined to reclaim Bagram from Taliban control. “The Taliban need things from us; therefore, we want this base back,” he said.

Bagram Air Base, located in Parwan province north of Kabul, was one of the most important U.S. military installations in Afghanistan until it was taken over by the Taliban following the American troop withdrawal in 2021. Washington’s renewed push to retake the base underscores growing concerns about the Taliban’s expanding influence over Afghanistan’s critical infrastructure and their inability to manage military facilities effectively.
