UNICEF Stands with Afghan Mothers on Mother’s Day

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has declared its unwavering support for Afghan mothers on the occasion of 24 Jawza, Afghanistan’s Mother’s Day. On Sunday, UNICEF posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account that supporting mothers is not limited to a single day but is a continuous commitment.

In its message, UNICEF described Afghan mothers as “heroes” and emphasized that this support extends to all mothers fulfilling various roles — from teachers and midwives to nurses, nutrition and social counselors, local mobilizers, community health workers, and mothers who care for their families at home.

Every year, 24 Jawza is celebrated as Mother’s Day in Afghanistan, a day dedicated to recognizing the vital role of mothers in raising generations and strengthening families.

This comes amid increased restrictions on women and mothers following the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan. Women face severe limitations in education, employment, and travel. These restrictions have not only affected the personal lives of women but have also limited many mothers’ access to educational and work opportunities, raising serious concerns about the future of children and the country’s social fabric. In such circumstances, the emphasis by international organizations on supporting mothers becomes even more critical.
