Taliban’s Northern Court Declares 14.5 Jeribs of Land in Sheberghan as Government Property

The Taliban’s Ministry of Justice has announced that its specialized court in the northern zone has declared 14.5 jeribs of land in Sheberghan city, the capital of Jawzjan province, as government property and handed it over to the Commission for the Prevention of Land Grabbing.

In a statement released on Saturday, June 5, the ministry said the land includes two plots located in the Jagdalak Kekretak Jar Koodi area of Sheberghan city. According to the ministry, after examining the occupants’ documents, reviewing the commission’s case files, consulting land registries, and gathering information from relevant authorities, the court ruled that the entire area is considered government property.

Based on the statement, the case had previously been referred by the Commission for the Prevention of Land Grabbing and the Recovery of Usurped Lands to the specialized court handling government land disputes in the northern zone.

Since regaining control over Afghanistan, the Taliban administration has declared thousands of jeribs of land across various provinces and cities as government property. This move has often sparked protests from private landowners. Some landowners and housing developers claim that the courts under the Taliban do not transparently or thoroughly review their documents, and that their rulings lack impartiality and fairness.

Critics stress that the absence of an independent and transparent judicial system has heightened concerns about the protection of citizens’ property rights and created uncertainty in the resolution of land disputes.
