Afghan Refugee Sentenced to Two and a Half Years for Abduction and Sexual Assault of Child in London

A UK court sentenced 30-year-old Afghan refugee Officer Safi to two and a half years in prison for the abduction and sexual assault of a seven-year-old girl at a hotel in West London. According to court documents, his name will remain on the sex offenders register for seven years.
British media reported that the incident occurred in September last year, when Safi separated the seven-year-old girl from her mother, grabbed her arms, and dragged her into a hotel corridor. The child testified in court that she was too terrified to ask him to stop, and the incident continues to cause her nightmares and frequent crying.
Safi entered the UK in 2021. Reports indicate that in his asylum application, he stated that he had “been with the Taliban since the age of ten.” His asylum claim was initially rejected by UK authorities, but he subsequently filed an appeal.
Safi’s defense lawyer claimed during the trial that his client had been taken as a “slave” by the Taliban during childhood and only underwent three months of training with the group. However, Safi denied the charges in court and, with the help of a Pashto interpreter, said that he only kissed the child out of affection for children.
This case has reignited debates over the security vetting and background checks of asylum seekers in the UK—a topic that authorities have consistently emphasized as crucial in the case review process.
