Afghanistan Central Bank Declares Rejecting Small Afghani Banknotes Illegal

The spokesperson for Afghanistan’s central bank (Da Afghanistan Bank), operating under the Taliban administration, has stated that refusing Afghan banknotes and coins of 1, 2, and 5 Afghani in daily transactions is against regulations, as these currencies hold full legal tender status.

Hasibullah Nori explained that recent reports have been received indicating that some individuals are refusing to accept these currency units; however, according to prevailing laws, no person or institution can refuse to accept the national currency in transactions.

He further emphasized that “white dollars” must also be accepted in the market without charging any commission. According to him, commercial banks, exchange offices, and financial service companies are obliged to comply with the guidelines and directives issued by the central bank.

In recent months, complaints have emerged from some residents about the rejection of small banknotes in certain areas, a situation that could disrupt everyday transactions. The central bank has warned that legal action will be taken against violations.
