UN Reports 4.2 Million Afghans Need Emergency Shelter in 2026 Amid Housing Crisis

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Afghanistan has announced that approximately 4.2 million people in the country will require emergency shelter and non-food items in 2026, highlighting the severity of the housing crisis.
The agency pointed to the recent global housing summit held in Baku, emphasizing that while worldwide discussions focus on the future of housing, thousands of families in Afghanistan are struggling with urgent and vital needs for adequate shelter.
UN-Habitat added that the shortage of housing and lack of basic living facilities pose a serious challenge for millions of residents, warning that without immediate and coordinated international action, providing suitable shelter for all will not be possible.
The ongoing crisis continues in the aftermath of recent political changes and widespread economic restrictions, which have severely diminished domestic capacities to assist those in need. Many families, especially in vulnerable and remote areas, remain in insecure conditions without access to basic services—a situation that requires serious and responsible attention from the Taliban administration and sustained support from the international community.
