Six Check Dams Commissioned in Khost to Boost Agriculture and Water Management

Officials from the Directorate of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock in Khost province announced that six check dams were constructed and commissioned in 2025 (Solar Hijri year 1404) in the region. According to them, these projects were implemented with financial support from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Information provided indicates that these check dams, built at a total cost of 120,000 US dollars, are located in the districts of Bak, Zazi Maydan, and Sabari Yaqubi. The purpose of constructing these facilities is to manage surface water and strengthen the agricultural sector in these areas.

Check dams are small water control structures that help control seasonal floods, facilitate water storage, and recharge underground water resources. They can play a significant role in improving agricultural yields. Khost is among the provinces where a considerable portion of the population relies on agriculture and livestock for their livelihood.

These projects have been implemented amid challenges faced by the agricultural sector in many provinces of the country, including water scarcity and reduction in supportive resources. The continuation of such programs to enhance farmers’ livelihoods requires systematic planning and sustained support.
