Former US Official: No Justifiable Reason for War with Iran During Trump Presidency
Gary Sick, a former member of the US National Security Council, stated that during Donald Trump’s presidency, there was no imminent threat from Iran that would justify military action. He emphasized that initiating a war without a clear and documented reason contradicts the accepted principles of the laws of war.
In an interview with CNN, Sick said that over the past several centuries, specific laws have been established to regulate the behavior of countries during wartime. According to him, these laws do not necessarily prevent wars from occurring but provide a framework for how countries should act in situations of serious and immediate threats.
The former US official believes that at the referenced time, there was no indication of an immediate threat. Referring to previous periods of Washington-Tehran relations, he added that the decision to engage in war should be based on convincing and proportional reasons relative to the level of threat.
Sick also warned that violating humanitarian principles and the laws of war can have serious consequences for a country’s international credibility. He said the United States has always been known as a law-abiding nation, but action without clear justification could damage this image.
He concluded by stressing that any military response must be proportional, and a large-scale attack in reaction to limited events does not align with accepted international legal standards. According to him, adherence to the law is an essential part of the responsibility countries hold within the international system.
