The Taliban-run Interior Ministry says it has carried out 8,000 anti-drug operations
Sheikh Abdul Rahman Munir, deputy minister for counter-narcotics at the Taliban-run Interior Ministry, said the ministry has launched more than 8,000 operations this year against suspects in drug-related crimes. He added that more than 10,000 people have been arrested in connection with drug offences.
According to Munir, more than 4,300 operations were also carried out this year to gather drug addicts, and more than 12,500 operations were conducted to destroy poppy fields. These measures continue to have wide-ranging economic and social consequences for Afghan society.
However, human rights and social experts have expressed concern about the increase in these operations and have called for attention to the root causes of the growth of narcotics and its negative effects on the people. In response to these concerns, the Taliban administration has also stressed the need to continue a serious fight against drugs.
