Russia Urges Sports Federations to Scrutinise Dutch Hosting Record

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, questioned the Dutch authorities’ performance in ensuring the neutrality of international competitions and urged sports federations to carefully examine cases involving the Netherlands before choosing a host country.
She also described Dutch officials’ claims about a threat from Russia as unfounded, calling such positions a sign of the decline of Western political elites. The remarks come as tensions continue over the participation of Russian athletes in international competitions and the many restrictions imposed on them.
According to reports in October 2026, the Netherlands refused to issue visas to three Russian gymnasts, including world champion Angelina Melnikova. Russian officials have described the move as discriminatory and unfair.
