School principal and teacher wounded in shooting in southern France

The 53-year-old principal and a 37-year-old teacher at Lacanal middle school in the town of Aubais in southern France were wounded in a shooting. Local officials said no students were injured in the incident.

According to French media, the school principal was wounded in the right hip and the teacher in the thigh. Their condition was not disclosed in the reports published.

Police have detained a 14-year-old student on suspicion of involvement in the shooting, and a judicial investigation has been opened on charges of attempted murder.

France’s Education Minister Edouard Geffray said he had gone to the scene with the interior minister and a member of parliament. He described the shooting as unacceptable and called for a collective response to the spread of violence in French society.

According to local reports, the incident was not linked to recent student protests in France, and the school had not been blocked during those protests.
