More Than 2.4 Million Girls in Afghanistan Denied Education, Reports Say

On 11 October, International Day of the Girl, published reports and figures show that under Taliban rule in Afghanistan, millions of girls remain deprived of their basic rights, especially the right to education.

According to the information presented in this report, more than 2.4 million girls in Afghanistan have been unable to attend secondary education, and the doors of schools and universities remain closed to them.

Alongside sweeping restrictions on girls’ rights, concerns over the rise in child marriage in Afghanistan also continue. A United Nations report in 2021 said that around 30% of girls in Afghanistan are married before reaching the age of 18.

Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, said in a message yesterday on the occasion of International Day of the Girl that more than 12 million girls worldwide are married before the age of 18 each year. She called on governments, international institutions and civil society to work to end child marriage.

According to the organization, this year’s International Day of the Girl is being marked with a focus on ending child marriage, an issue that underscores the protection of girls’ rights and the creation of opportunities for their education and development.
