Afghanistan’s First Triathlon Athlete Eliminated at Asian Games
Wais Khairandish, Afghanistan’s first triathlon representative, was unable to finish the men’s individual competition at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, and was eliminated from the contest.
After completing 750 metres of swimming and two laps of cycling, he fell one lap behind the leading athletes. Under the rules of the event, athletes who fall one lap behind are not allowed to continue.
As a result, no final time or placing was recorded for Khairandish.
In this competition, a Japanese athlete won the gold medal, while representatives of China and Kazakhstan finished second and third respectively.
On the sidelines of the event, Naqibullah Sheikhzada, head of Afghanistan’s sports delegation, met with officials from the International Olympic Committee and the Asian committee. According to the report, his talks with officials from these bodies focused on issues related to the holding of the Asian Games in Japan.
Triathlon is an endurance sport that usually consists of three parts: swimming, cycling and running. Khairandish’s participation in the event was significant because he is regarded as Afghanistan’s first representative in this sport at the Asian Games.
