U.S. House Again Passes Bill to Restrict War Powers Over Iran
The U.S. House of Representatives has voted for the third time in favour of a bill aimed at limiting war powers in relation to Iran.
The measure passed by 220 votes to 204, with a number of Republican members joining most Democrats in supporting it.
The Guardian reported that the vote was similar to previous rounds and is likely to be the final action taken by the U.S. House on the issue before the midterm elections. According to the report, the consequences of war against Iran, as well as the cost-of-living crisis in the United States, could affect the Republican Party’s position in the elections.
The Guardian also wrote that the U.S. war against Iran has cost at least $38 billion and has reduced the country’s missile defence stockpiles to the extent that rebuilding them could take up to five years.
The U.S. House first approved the measure in June and reaffirmed it in July. According to The Guardian, the U.S. Senate also agreed to end the war against Iran in its 10th attempt, but some Republican senators backed away from that position after criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Under the U.S. Constitution, the power to declare war rests with Congress, although the country’s president can also authorise military action in some cases.
