US Raises Tariffs on Some Canadian Goods to 50%

The United States on Tuesday raised customs tariffs on a number of imported Canadian goods amid continuing trade tensions with Canada, in a move that broadens the scope of the trade war between Washington and Ottawa.

According to Al Mayadeen, the tariff increase targets a group of Canadian goods, with some types of dairy products, paper, steel and motorboats now subject to a 50% tariff.

The move comes after Canada had already announced heavy tariffs on imported goods from the United States. Canadian officials said trade talks with the US had failed to produce results.

At the same time, the US government had previously announced that it intended to ban the entry of some Canadian goods into the country from Sept. 29 this year. The United States and Canada are considered major trading partners in North America, and any new restrictions between the two countries could affect bilateral trade.
