Taliban Calls UN Human Rights Council Meeting on Afghanistan Ineffective

Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Taliban administration, said on the eve of a United Nations Human Rights Council meeting that any meeting or gathering on Afghanistan held without the presence of a representative from the country would not be effective, in the view of the administration.

In an interview with Tolonews, he added that, according to the Taliban administration, experience over the past five years has shown that meetings held without the participation of an Afghan representative have produced no results.

Mujahid did not provide further details on what the Taliban administration meant by a representative of Afghanistan or how participation in the meeting would take place.

The UN Human Rights Council is one of the organisation’s main bodies for monitoring the human rights situation in countries, and Afghanistan has repeatedly been at the centre of discussion in its meetings in recent years.
