Political and Defence Committee of Makkah Agreement Begins in Istanbul
The first meeting of the strategic political and defence committee established under the Makkah Agreement began on Monday in the Turkish city of Istanbul. Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan have gathered to discuss political and defence cooperation.
According to Al Arabiya, Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman is heading his country’s delegation. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan is also attending the meeting, along with a number of senior military officials.
The meeting is attended by the defence and foreign ministers, as well as the army chiefs of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan. The composition suggests that the talks are focused on coordination at the political and military levels among the three countries.
Reuters reported on Sunday that the discussions are likely to include strengthening defence capabilities, increasing coordination among the armed forces and expanding cooperation in the defence industry, including joint production and development.
The Makkah Agreement was signed earlier this month. Under the agreement, the three countries are committed to mutual defence in the event of an attack on any of the parties.
