Pakistan Denies Asim Munir Carried Trump Message to Iran
Pakistan’s foreign ministry has said reports that a new message from U.S. President Donald Trump was conveyed to Iran by General Asim Munir, the commander of Pakistan’s army, are false. The ministry said Munir’s recent visit to Tehran was part of Islamabad’s efforts to prevent the resumption of war and help contain the crisis.
Taher Andrabi, spokesman for Pakistan’s foreign ministry, said at a news briefing on Thursday that the army chief’s visit was part of Islamabad’s mediating role. He rejected reports that messages were exchanged between Washington and Tehran during the trip.
According to him, the talks focused on ending the current deadlock, reducing tensions and renewing efforts to restore regional stability and peace. Andrabi also said these efforts were aimed at helping reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The Pakistani foreign ministry spokesman added that Islamabad, in cooperation with friendly countries, continues its mediation efforts between the United States and Iran. He said Pakistan supports measures that help peace and lead to a fair solution to the dispute.
Andrabi also said trade between Pakistan and Iran continues and that Islamabad does not consider itself bound to enforce unilateral sanctions against Tehran.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the region’s key energy transit routes, and any disruption there could affect shipping and regional trade. Pakistan, which borders Iran, is also closely watching developments between Tehran and Washington.
