UN OCHA Says Afghanistan Shelter Programme Faces $153 Million Funding Shortfall
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has said that the “Coordinated Shelter, Land and Settlements Response” programme in Afghanistan is facing a funding shortfall of $153 million.
On Wednesday, Sept. 4, OCHA said that $160 million had been requested to implement the programme this year, but so far only 4.7% of the funding has been secured.
The agency described safe shelter as a basic necessity and stressed the need for “action for humanity.”
The funding gap comes as humanitarian relief programmes in Afghanistan have faced persistent financial crises in recent years, especially after the suspension of US financial aid.
Aid agencies have repeatedly warned that dwindling financial resources have limited their ability to meet people’s basic needs and have called on donor countries to provide greater support for humanitarian programmes in Afghanistan.
