UN Supports Over 2,650 Afghan Women to Start Businesses Amid Restrictions

The United Nations Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (UN STFA) announced that in 2025 it supported 2,656 women in the development of small businesses and income-generating activities; an effort deemed vital for many families amid widespread restrictions on women’s work.

This agency tweeted on Wednesday, July 29, that women participating in these programs were able to strengthen their economic activities through specialized training, facilities, and necessary resources.

According to the fund’s statement, some of these women have successfully started new small businesses or expanded their existing activities, providing a source of income for themselves and their families.

Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, women have faced extensive restrictions in work, education, and social participation—limitations that have drastically reduced their access to economic opportunities. Under such conditions, some international organizations are striving to alleviate family livelihood pressures by supporting women’s small businesses.
