Floods in Nuristan Leave 25 Dead, Aid Reaches 500 Families

Local officials in Nuristan province have reported that last week’s devastating floods in Parun, the provincial capital, have claimed 25 lives and injured 125 others. The floods have caused financial damages estimated at around $40 million.

According to authorities, nearly 500 affected families have so far received food supplies, non-food items, and cash assistance. These aid efforts have been provided by both governmental and non-governmental organizations, with plans to accelerate the relief process.

Faisal Mokhtar, the deputy governor of Nuristan, highlighting the extensive casualties and damages, stated that the floods inflicted heavy human and financial losses and called on everyone to contribute to helping those affected within their capacities. Saifullah Khalid, head of the province’s Emergency Preparedness and Response department, also announced that additional aid shipments are expected in the near future.

However, some residents affected by the floods say they have suffered extensive financial and personal losses and require more sustained support. Mohammad Usman, one of the flood victims, said that despite serious hardships, they have received some assistance. Mohammad Zubair, another Parun resident, added that the floods destroyed their home and most of their belongings.

Nuristan, a mountainous province in eastern Afghanistan, faces the recurring threat of sudden floods every rainy season.
