Taliban Representative Requests Transfer of Afghanistan’s UN Seat Amid Ongoing Dispute
While Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations remains occupied by a representative of the former government, the Taliban administration’s envoy in Qatar has called for the transfer of this seat to their administration.
Sohail Shaheen, the Taliban-appointed representative for Afghanistan’s seat at the UN, welcomed the appointment of Rabab Fatima as head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). He urged her to present what he described as the “true image of Afghanistan” to the world and to work towards strengthening Kabul’s engagement with the international community.
Shaheen told Tolo News that the new UN representative should work towards resolving the country’s issues in light of Afghanistan’s religion, culture, and realities, and ultimately pave the way for transferring Afghanistan’s UN seat to the “Islamic Emirate.”
Following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, the administration nominated Shaheen as Afghanistan’s representative to the UN; however, the UN General Assembly’s Credentials Committee has yet to make a decision regarding his acceptance.
Some observers point to the lack of an inclusive government, widespread restrictions on the rights of women and girls, and uncertainties over the Taliban administration’s international commitments as major factors delaying the recognition of its representative at the United Nations.
