IAEA Investigates Reported Attack on Iran’s Darkhovin Nuclear Site
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced that it is examining reports regarding an attack on the site of a nuclear power plant under construction in the Darkhovin area of Iran’s Khuzestan province.
The UN-affiliated agency stated that the facility was in the early stages of construction and, according to the most recent inspection, no nuclear material was stored there. The IAEA further noted that given this situation, the risk of radiation exposure resulting from the incident appears to be low.
Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the agency, simultaneously reiterated the necessity of “military restraint around all sites associated with nuclear activities.”
Earlier, Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization announced that the Darkhovin nuclear power plant site was targeted in an attack by the United States in the early hours of Sunday. The organization condemned the act, describing it as a violation of international law, and stated that the project is part of Iran’s scientific and nuclear development programs.
Darkhovin, located in southern Iran, hosts this power plant project, which has been one of several nuclear initiatives pursued by the country in recent years.
