UNICEF Highlights Crucial Role of Female Health Workers in Afghanistan
The UNICEF representative in Afghanistan emphasized the essential and irreplaceable role of female health workers across the country in ensuring the health of mothers and children. Tajuddin Owayali, on Thursday, July 16, stressed in a message posted on his X account that these workers save lives daily by providing healthcare services, especially in maternal and child care.
According to Owayali, female health workers at just one health center in Herat province have supported over one thousand safe deliveries this year alone, demonstrating their direct impact in reducing childbirth-related risks. He highlighted that the presence of these workers is vital for women’s access to quality health services, particularly in reproductive and maternity care.
These remarks come amid widespread challenges facing Afghanistan’s healthcare system, including financial shortfalls, reduced humanitarian aid, and a growing demand for medical services.
At the same time, restrictions and policies imposed by the Taliban administration concerning women’s education and employment have raised concerns about the future of the female workforce in the health sector. International organizations have repeatedly warned about the potential negative consequences of these policies on the health of mothers and children.
