New ICU Unit Established at Balkh Hospital with $1.5 Million Funding

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced the establishment and equipping of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Balkh Provincial Hospital with a budget of $1.5 million, which is now fully operational.
This agency stated on its official X (formerly Twitter) page on Wednesday, July 9, that the project was implemented with financial support from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
According to the released information, the ICU includes 15 fully equipped beds, advanced medical equipment, an oxygen supply system, and a 20-kilowatt solar power system. The use of solar power alongside the conventional grid is designed to ensure sustainable energy supply during emergencies.
The ICU was inaugurated one year ago and is now fully serving patients in critical health conditions. Such units are considered vital for treating severely ill patients, requiring specialized equipment, continuous oxygen supply, and reliable electricity.
The shortage of intensive care facilities in many hospitals across the country remains a serious challenge for Afghanistan’s healthcare system. International organizations have repeatedly emphasized the need for increased investment in this sector.
