Turkey Detains 24 Afghan Refugees Attempting Illegal Border Crossing in Edirne

Turkish authorities have detained 24 Afghan refugees while attempting to illegally cross the border in the city of Edirne. According to the police, among those arrested are seven women and six children, all of whom have been transferred to the Foreign Nationals Deportation Center.
Turkish police have also arrested the driver of a minibus on charges of illegally transporting these refugees. No further details have been released regarding the identities or legal status of the detainees.
Edirne, located in northwestern Turkey near the borders with Greece and Bulgaria, is a major transit route for migrants aiming to reach European countries.
In recent years, Turkey has increased security measures along its western borders and regularly reports the detention of migrants attempting to enter Europe through illegal routes. According to the Turkish Directorate of Immigration, 16,436 Afghan refugees have been detained across Turkey in the first five months of this year for lacking residence permits.
