Iranian Consul Meets Herat Governor to Discuss Expanding Bilateral Cooperation

The Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Herat held talks with the governor of the province to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, agriculture, and mining. The meeting was held between Alireza Marhami and Sheikh Maulana Islamjar, the Taliban-appointed governor of Herat.

According to a statement from the Information and Culture Department of the Taliban administration in Herat, both parties emphasized developing economic relations and increasing cooperation in various sectors. The discussion also focused on strengthening trade interactions and making better use of existing capacities.

The governor of Herat welcomed the expansion of bilateral cooperation and stated that to improve transit and trade relations, cooperation must be enhanced at all border ports and crossings shared between the two countries. Due to its shared border with Iran, Herat is considered one of Afghanistan’s most important commercial and transit routes.

In recent years, despite political changes in Afghanistan, economic relations between Kabul and Tehran have continued. However, experts have consistently stressed the necessity of transparency in economic agreements and ensuring Afghanistan’s national interests—a matter expected to be considered in any new cooperation efforts.
