Taliban Requests Participation in UN Security Council Meeting on Afghanistan

As the UN Security Council holds its quarterly meeting on Afghanistan, Taliban officials have requested that the council prioritize political and economic engagement with Afghanistan and facilitate the participation of Taliban representatives in its meetings.

Taliban representatives have emphasized that if representatives of the current Afghan government are present, their views will be directly expressed and decisions will be made based on “existing realities.” However, the Taliban administration has not yet been recognized by the international community, and the absence of an inclusive government and respect for fundamental citizen rights remain major obstacles to formal engagement with the world.

Members of the Security Council are set to review the political, security, economic developments, and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan over the past three months during today’s meeting. The future of the international community’s relationship with Afghanistan and the country’s humanitarian conditions are also expected to be central topics of discussion.

This meeting takes place as the Security Council will decide within less than eight days whether to extend or end the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), an entity that has been a primary source of reporting on human rights and humanitarian issues in Afghanistan over recent years.

Taliban officials have previously criticized UNAMA reports and called for these reports to focus more on what they describe as “progress and key issues.” Nevertheless, international organizations have consistently stressed the importance of reflecting on-the-ground realities, especially concerning human rights and the situation of women and girls.
