Pentagon Nears Release of Comprehensive Report on U.S. Troop Withdrawal from Afghanistan

The U.S. Secretary of Defense has announced that the final comprehensive report on the process of withdrawing American forces from Afghanistan is in its final stages and is expected to be published by the end of this summer. He stated that all interviews have been conducted and the review of classified documents related to the case has been completed.

Pete Hegseth, speaking to reporters at the end of his trip to Paris, added that this report is the result of a broad and thorough review. According to him, the purpose of preparing this document is to provide a more accurate picture of the decision-making process, the execution of the withdrawal, and the events linked to the end of the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan.

He emphasized that this review aims to answer existing questions regarding how the troop withdrawal was managed and to clarify various aspects of the process. The withdrawal of U.S. forces in August 2021 was conducted in a rushed manner and ultimately led to the Taliban regaining power, an event that had widespread political, security, and social consequences for the people of Afghanistan.

The U.S. Department of Defense had previously stated that in preparing this report, over 9 million documents collected from various agencies and previous Pentagon investigations were evaluated. The management of the withdrawal and its aftermath remain one of the most contentious issues in U.S. foreign policy.
