FAO Warns Rising Heat Puts Summer Crops Under Pressure in Afghanistan

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in its latest seasonal report has stated that the outlook for crop harvests across large parts of Afghanistan remains favorable. However, gradually increasing temperatures and declining water availability could put pressure on summer crops, livestock, and pastures.

According to this report, which reviews the climate and agricultural conditions in June, the current situation in many areas of the country is described as suitable for harvesting crops. Yet, the rising temperature trend alongside diminishing water resources has raised concerns about the sustainability of agricultural production in the coming months.

FAO has warned that if this situation continues, it may lead to a decrease in both the quality and quantity of summer crops and impact livestock and forage resources. In Afghanistan, where a large part of the population relies on agriculture and animal husbandry, any climatic change can have direct economic and livelihood consequences.

Experts have repeatedly emphasized that water resource management, strengthening irrigation systems, and preparedness for climate change are key factors in reducing farmers’ vulnerability to weather fluctuations.
