Afghanistan’s Taliban Minister of Water and Energy Visits Kilegi Dam Site in Baghlan Province

The Taliban’s Ministry of Water and Energy has announced that Haji Mullah Mohammad Yunus Akhundzada, the Minister of Water and Energy, visited the Kilegi hydroelectric dam site in Doshi district of Baghlan province. According to the ministry, the visit primarily focused on reviewing the progress and technical studies related to the project.

During the visit, Mujib-ur-Rahman Omar Akhundzada, also a minister in the Water and Energy Ministry, accompanied the minister. The program was also attended by Mawlawi Abdul Rahman Haqqani, Governor of Baghlan, the police chief, the commander of the 217th Pamir Corps, and Mawlawi Asadullah Hamid, head of the Panj-Aab Hydraulic Zone.

According to the information provided, the geotechnical studies and surveys for the dam have reached their final stages. However, no details have been released regarding the start date for construction work, the budget allocation, or how the project’s funding will be secured.

The Kilegi dam is considered one of the significant potential projects for hydroelectric power generation in northern Afghanistan. While the Taliban authorities speak of progress in the project studies, local residents and experts have consistently emphasized the need for transparency, a clear timeline, and guarantees to ensure the project’s standards and proper implementation.
