Only 30% of Humanitarian Aid Budget for Afghanistan Secured by Early September

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that over the first eight months of 2026, more than 9.3 million people in Afghanistan have received at least one form of humanitarian assistance. However, by the end of August, only about 30% of the required budget to provide this aid had been secured, leaving a shortfall of over $1.2 billion. This financial gap could seriously undermine ongoing efforts to support vulnerable Afghans and exacerbate the country’s humanitarian crisis. The funding shortage comes as humanitarian needs in Afghanistan continue to rise due to the challenging security, economic, and social conditions.
