UN Chief Warns of Global Nuclear Warhead Increase Amidst Arms Control Concerns

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a warning about the rising number of nuclear warheads worldwide, stating that, for the first time in decades, the trend of reducing these weapons has halted and reversed. Guterres emphasized that the international community must move away from the risk of nuclear war and that the time has come to reinvigorate countries’ commitments to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. He warned that ongoing arms competitions could pose a serious threat to international security.

Meanwhile, Gennady Gatilov, Russia’s representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, described the current state of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as worrying. The treaty is one of the most important international frameworks aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.

In an interview with the RIA Novosti news agency, Gatilov claimed that Western countries are attempting to politicize the activities and frameworks of the treaty, which he believes could undermine multilateral cooperation on arms control.
