Shanghai Cooperation Organization Members Express Concern Over Afghanistan’s Security at Moscow Consultative Meeting

Member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) expressed deep concern over the current situation in Afghanistan during a consultative meeting held in Moscow, emphasizing that the country must be free from war, terrorism, and narcotics. At the meeting, deputy foreign ministers highlighted the importance of establishing an independent, neutral, and stable Afghanistan for regional security.

Reports indicate that the discussions extensively covered regional security issues, political cooperation, and Afghanistan’s future. Participants linked Afghanistan’s situation to the overall stability of the region and called for joint efforts to address the existing challenges.

The resumption of the contact group between the SCO and Afghanistan, practical engagement with the Taliban administration, and exploring new avenues for cooperation were also key topics during the meeting. Members stressed that a coordinated and regional approach toward Afghanistan is essential to effectively respond to ongoing problems.

Despite these positions, the Taliban administration has yet to respond to the outcomes of the meeting and the statements made by member country officials, including Pakistan. Meanwhile, the regional community continues to underscore the need for an inclusive political structure and comprehensive security across Afghanistan, although reports persist of ongoing concerns over the country’s security and political situation.
