Pakistan and Russia Discuss Terrorist Threats in Afghanistan

Muhammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, announced that he held talks with Albert Khurf, the Russian Ambassador to Islamabad, regarding the threat posed by terrorist groups based in Afghanistan and regional security developments. He stated that cross-border terrorism and the security situation in Afghanistan under Taliban rule were the main topics of the meeting.
On Tuesday, February 17, Sadiq wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) page that the two sides discussed shared interests and security concerns. According to him, diplomatic efforts to address these concerns were also a part of the conversations.
In recent years, Pakistan has repeatedly expressed concerns over the presence and activities of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) within Afghanistan. Islamabad officials insist that the group uses Afghan territory to launch attacks against Pakistan’s security. The Taliban administration has consistently rejected these claims, but ongoing attacks in border areas have heightened tensions between the two sides.
Yesterday, Pakistan’s special representative also held talks with Australia’s High Commissioner in Islamabad about cross-border terrorism. The continuation of these consultations indicates that concerns about armed groups operating in Afghanistan remain a regional issue, and the Taliban administration is expected to be held accountable for addressing these threats.
Afghanistan has been a focal point of regional security discussions in recent years due to the presence of various armed groups. This issue has also affected the country’s internal stability and its relations with neighboring states.
