New Yorker Highlights Contradictions in Trump’s Statements on War with Iran

The American magazine The New Yorker, in a recent report, described U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks about war with Iran as contradictory and lacking coherence, questioning how he claims progress “according to plan” without a clear strategy. Susan Glasser, the article’s author, wrote that a month ago Trump announced in an eight-minute video message that he had brought the U.S. into war with Iran, an action he said had widespread economic repercussions globally. Despite the promises made, the writer notes there are no signs that the stated objectives have been achieved, and in his recent televised speech, the U.S. president repeated his previous arguments. The article points out that on Wednesday night, without indicating any imminent ceasefire or clear path to de-escalate tensions, Trump reiterated his previous claims. Among the crises mentioned is the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic passage through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas transit. Glasser also cited Trump’s assertions such as “complete destruction of Iran” and “the invincibility of American military power,” stating these remarks do not align with realities on the ground. She added that some of these statements appear so unprofessional that they seem to have been made without thorough review. Furthermore, the article notes that in recent weeks, Trump has alternately described the war’s goals as either “regime change in Iran” or “the destruction of the nuclear program,” but in his latest speech, he has denied some of these objectives. According to The New Yorker, these shifting positions raise serious questions about Washington’s strategy. The writer recalled a U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency report which assesses that Iran does not currently have the capability to directly threaten U.S. soil with ballistic missiles in the near future, contradicting some of Trump’s claims. The New Yorker also referred to a recent CNN poll showing that only 31% of American citizens approve of Trump’s economic management, while public dissatisfaction has reached 64%, statistics that the magazine says highlight his growing political challenges domestically.
