Over 537 Million Afghanis in Damaged Banknotes Burned in Herat by Central Bank

The Central Bank has announced the collection and destruction of 537,746,000 Afghanis worth of damaged banknotes in Herat province. These banknotes were gathered from the western zone of the country and included various denominations of the Afghani currency.

According to the Central Bank, the banknotes were in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 Afghanis. After completing the necessary procedures, the notes were burned once in special furnaces.

The process of burning the damaged banknotes was conducted under the supervision of a committee led by Mullah Mohammad Akhund, the second deputy of the Central Bank. Representatives from the Ministries of Justice and Finance, as well as security agencies, were present during the procedure.

Mullah Mohammad Akhund stated that the destruction of damaged banknotes is part of the Central Bank’s ongoing policy aimed at maintaining the health of the monetary system and facilitating public access to clean banknotes for daily transactions.

He added that this process plays a crucial role in financial system transparency and preserving the credibility of the Afghani currency. He emphasized that citizens’ cooperation in properly using Afghan banknotes is a collective responsibility.

The Central Bank emphasized that to ease daily transactions, it periodically withdraws damaged banknotes from circulation and replaces them with new notes.
